Matrix ChatGPT Bot connects Matrix rooms to OpenAI's ChatGPT API for people who want AI conversations in their existing chat client, including Element. The project is archived and no longer maintained. It's open source under AGPL-3.0, and the maintainers point users to Baibot as an alternative.
You host the bot yourself using Docker or Node.js. The model runs through OpenAI's cloud API, so self-hosting the bot doesn't keep prompts and conversation context on your hardware. It requires an internet connection, a Matrix account for the bot, and an OpenAI account with API access.
The bot supports encrypted Matrix conversations and stores context for follow-up questions. Context can belong to a room, a thread, or both; threads can branch from the room's conversation. This lets separate discussions retain their own history inside the same Matrix room. A typing indicator shows when the bot is waiting for an answer.
Access controls can limit which users and rooms may interact with the bot, including users on a particular Matrix homeserver. By default, anyone who knows the bot's name can invite it or chat with it. You can select the OpenAI chat model, with gpt-3.5-turbo as the documented default, and point API requests to a different base URL. The self-hosted storage holds the bot's encryption keys, while OpenAI processes the messages sent for model responses.

AstrBot brings AI assistants into messaging apps such as Telegram, Discord, Slack, QQ and WeCom. It's an open source platform under AGPL-3.0 for people building personal companions, customer support bots or team automation. You can run it on your own computer or server, including through Docker, or use its desktop app for browser-style chat.
Discord Ollama Bot connects locally hosted language models to Discord, so a community can use an AI assistant inside its existing chat server. It's for server owners who want to choose and host the models themselves while keeping Discord as the interface. Model inference runs on your hardware, but conversations still pass through Discord, so this isn't a fully offline chat app.
ollama-telegram connects Telegram chats to a local LLM through Ollama. The project is archived and no longer maintained. It's for people who want to access their own model through Telegram, with the bot and model backend running on hardware or a server they control.
OpenClaw is a self-hosted AI assistant that connects your own computer to the messaging services you already use. It's for people who want a personal assistant on their laptop, or teams that want to run a shared assistant on their own hardware. The project is open source under the MIT license.
