TaxHacker is a self-hosted AI accounting app for freelancers, indie hackers, and small businesses that need to turn receipts and invoices into searchable transactions. The project is in early development. Its open source edition runs on your own infrastructure or home server through Docker and uses the MIT license.

It extracts dates, vendors, amounts, taxes, and line items from receipt photos and PDF invoices, then stores them in a table you can edit and filter. Bulk processing handles multiple files together, and individual invoice items can become separate transactions. It supports documents in different languages, including handwritten receipts.

Custom categories, projects, and fields let you organize records around your business. You can edit the AI prompts to extract details such as addresses or project codes and assign transactions to categories automatically. Full-text search covers recognized document content. Currency conversion uses exchange rates from the transaction date and includes cryptocurrencies such as BTC, ETH, and LTC. Manual entry is available too.

The invoice generator supports editable labels, reusable templates, and included or excluded taxes such as VAT and GST. It exports invoices as PDFs or transactions. CSV import and export support accounting workflows, while a full data archive lets you move your records elsewhere.

Self-hosting keeps storage on your server. AI analysis can use cloud providers such as OpenAI, Gemini or Mistral, which receive the document content they process. The self-hosted version also supports local OpenAI-compatible endpoints, including Ollama and LM Studio, but the chosen model needs to handle OCR reliably.
