Excel AI Assistant

An open-source Excel AI add-in that edits workbooks using Ollama, MLX, OpenRouter or Groq. Runs locally with Excel on Mac, Windows or the web.

Excel AI Assistant is an MIT-licensed add-in for people who want AI to make changes directly in their spreadsheets. It runs on your machine alongside Excel for Mac, Windows or the web, and uses plain-language requests to edit the open workbook.

You choose where inference runs. Ollama and MLX keep prompts and workbook context local without an API key; MLX uses Apple Silicon's Metal acceleration. OpenRouter and Groq require an API key and send your message plus workbook context, including sheet names, headers and sampled cells, to the selected provider.

The assistant can filter and sort by column name, clean duplicate rows and whitespace, and apply cell or conditional formatting. It writes formulas such as XLOOKUP and cross-sheet references, explains existing formulas, creates charts and native pivot tables, and handles changes across several sheets in one request. It can also generate VBA for tasks outside Office JS's capabilities.

A plan preview lets you review the intended work before execution, and you can inspect generated code. Workbook edits have snapshot-based undo, though very large sheets may not be snapshotted. Risky file operations and shell commands require confirmation.

Beyond the open workbook, it can read local .xlsx and .xlsm files and search permitted folders by filename or cell content. Saved memory carries work preferences between chats. Chat history stays on your machine by default; optional Supabase sync stores it in the cloud for access across devices.

Setup requires a local Node server, a trusted HTTPS development certificate and sideloading the add-in manifest in Excel.
