II Agent is a self-hosted AI agent for developers and teams who want an assistant that can research a topic, write software and carry out tasks through a browser or shell. It's a Python framework with a web interface, released under Apache 2.0, so you can inspect, fork and extend the code.

The application stack can run on your own machine or server through Docker, including its database and file storage. Model requests go to the backend configured in model_configs.yaml. Supported options include OpenAI, Anthropic, Vertex AI, Azure and self-hosted models. Cloud providers require internet access and receive the model requests sent to them; self-hosting the application is separate from choosing a local model backend.

Its capabilities cover several kinds of work:

  • Research combines web searches, source checking and longer investigations through II-Researcher. It can turn research briefs into websites with citations and embedded Q&A.
  • Development includes website and mobile app generation, code editing, debugging and test writing. The agent can execute shell commands and interact with web pages using screenshots.
  • Document work includes PDF extraction and creation, Excel formulas and charts, Word editing, PowerPoint manipulation and slide creation with collaborative editing.
  • Reusable skills support custom workflows and GitHub-based processes. App connections include Gmail, Slack, Notion and Google Calendar.

Chat supports file attachments, a code interpreter and provider switching within a conversation. The web interface shows tool activity as tasks run, and separate agent sessions have isolated workspaces.
