Murmur is a desktop dictation app for people who want to speak into the apps they already use. It turns speech into text and inserts it at the cursor.

  • Dictation across apps: A hold-to-talk shortcut lets you dictate into the focused text field, with a floating recording overlay.
  • Whisper models and languages: Choose models from tiny through large-v3 to balance speed and accuracy, with automatic language detection for multilingual dictation.
  • Text cleanup: A local AI pass removes filler words and corrects grammar, punctuation and capitalization before the text reaches your app.
  • Transcript history: Search previous dictations and view word statistics and usage streaks in the desktop dashboard.

Murmur is free and open source under the MIT license. It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux using a CPU or GPU, including Metal on macOS. Models download on first use; local dictation can work offline afterward without an account. The app has no sync or telemetry.

In local mode, audio stays on your machine, is processed in memory and is discarded after transcription. Transcript text remains available in searchable history. Optional remote transcription sends audio to a configured OpenAI-compatible Whisper server on another machine. The macOS app isn't notarized by Apple.
