Octipus is a self-hosted AI workspace for people who want agents to work on code, research, and recurring tasks while keeping the results open to review. A lead agent can use tools itself or assign bounded work to specialist agents. You can inspect the sources, changes, checks, and execution records behind an answer.

It runs on your infrastructure, with Docker and Windows support, and is open source under the MIT license. Ollama provides a local model option; hosted connections include OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini. It also supports LiteLLM, compatible endpoints, and CLI agents such as Claude Code and Codex. Hosted providers and external connectors receive whatever data your workflows send to them, so self-hosting doesn't make every task local.

Coding agents can examine repositories, prepare changes, and run checks. Research tools combine web search with a knowledge base that supports document ingestion, OCR, and Obsidian vaults. Reports retain source references. Scheduled and event-driven workflows support explicit stages, retries, and human approval.

Custom roles define an agent's tools and permissions, and different kinds of work can use different models, including a separate model for review. Permission rules control what runs automatically and what needs approval. A shared task board tracks assignments and progress, while spend controls can warn or pause work.

You can access the workspace through a web app, terminal, or desktop client. Messaging connections include Telegram, Slack, Teams, and WhatsApp; MCP connects external tools.
