OwnPilot is a self-hosted personal AI assistant for people who want chat, personal records, and autonomous agents in one browser interface. It runs through Docker or on macOS, Windows, and Linux, and it's open source under the MIT license. Agents can work in separate workspaces, keep memory across tasks, and delegate work to other agents.
You can run models locally through Ollama, LM Studio, LocalAI, or vLLM, or connect to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and other OpenAI-compatible endpoints. OwnPilot stores its records in your PostgreSQL database; choosing a cloud model sends model requests to that provider. Its voice features use Whisper API and OpenAI TTS, so those parts rely on cloud services.
Agents can handle a single task, work continuously, follow schedules, or respond to events. You control their permissions, approval requirements, and budgets. A shared dashboard shows activity and lets you pause agents. Browser automation and file tools support research and practical tasks, while Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini CLI integration brings coding sessions into the same interface.
The assistant manages notes, tasks, contacts, calendars, and expenses, with persistent memory for facts and preferences. MCP support works in both directions: agents can use external MCP tools, and Claude Desktop or other clients can access OwnPilot's tools. Extensions and SKILL.md packages add capabilities. Telegram and WhatsApp provide messaging access, while Docker-isolated code execution and tool audit logs give you controls over agent actions.
