Assistant (rb81)
A self-hosted AI personal assistant that handles tasks by email or browser. Runs in Docker, uses OpenRouter, and is open source under Apache 2.0.
Assistant is a self-hosted AI agent for people who want to delegate work by email and receive the results in their inbox. It uses a dedicated mailbox, separate from your personal email, and also accepts tasks through a browser workspace or dashboard. You control how much autonomy it has.
The agent can research the web, read and edit files, write scripts, and carry out projects whose steps depend on earlier results. It runs scripts in an isolated Docker container. Recurring reminders let it revisit tasks later, while research jobs can pause to ask for guidance. Persistent memory carries preferences and decisions across sessions; searchable notes and contacts sit alongside it.
The shared document workspace lets you review and edit the agent's output, search files by text or meaning, and use an open document as context for a task. It extracts text from PDFs and Office files and converts documents to Markdown, HTML, PDF, or DOCX. Optional calendar access covers Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, and Zoho, with rules that restrict which events the agent manages. The dashboard exposes job progress, execution logs, and controls for giving instructions during a task.
Assistant is open source under Apache 2.0 and runs on your own machine or server through Docker. Its database and workspace are self-hosted, but model requests use OpenRouter and require an API key and internet access. It's designed for private networks: the API has no built-in authentication, and email controls restrict who can trigger tasks and which domains can receive replies.
