Open-source desktop image editor for Windows and Linux, with painting tools and AI inpainting through local or remote Stable Diffusion backends.
IntraPaint is a desktop image editor for artists who want to paint by hand and use AI to refine the same image. It brings prompt-based edits into a layered painting workspace, so you can adjust a sketch or a selected area without moving files between applications. It's open source under GPL-3.0.
The app runs on Windows and Linux; macOS requires manual setup and compilation. AI generation uses a separate Stable Diffusion backend, with support for ComfyUI, Forge WebUI and Automatic1111 WebUI. That backend can run locally or remotely through an API, so where generation happens depends on the backend you choose. The conventional editing tools also work with AI disabled.
Text-to-image generation creates images from prompts, while image-to-image and inpainting let you revise existing artwork or replace selected regions. ControlNet adds guidance from sketches, depth and poses, including recoloring and pose replication. AI upscaling uses Stable Diffusion with ControlNet or specialized models.
For manual work, IntraPaint has layer groups, blending modes and transformations, plus selection tools, editable text, filters and a paint bucket. Its libmypaint brush engine supports pressure-sensitive drawing tablets. You can use guided inpainting to refine small details or generate an image in sections when a single generation's size limit gets in the way.
