Lingolay

An offline screen translator for games and videos that runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with local NLLB-200 translation and Piper voice dubbing.

Lingolay is a free, open source screen translator for people who want translated subtitles while playing games or watching videos. It reads visible text with OCR, translates it on your computer and displays the result in a floating overlay. Optional Piper voices read the translations aloud.

Local translation uses Meta's NLLB-200 through CTranslate2. Once the models are downloaded, translation and dubbing work offline without an account or API key. Screen text stays on your PC, and the app has no telemetry. It can run on a CPU; an NVIDIA GPU with CUDA can reduce translation latency. An optional DeepL connection sends text to that cloud service and requires your own API key.

The subtitle handling waits for text that appears letter by letter, filters recognition flicker and avoids translating or speaking the same line repeatedly. It also excludes its own overlay from recognition. You can adjust the subtitle appearance and position, and save capture profiles for individual games. Supported languages include Japanese, Chinese, Korean, English, Ukrainian and Turkish, with translation in either direction between supported languages.

The app runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Windows has game mode, global hotkeys and audio ducking that lowers other apps' volume during dubbing. Exclusive fullscreen games can't be captured; windowed and borderless modes work.

Lingolay uses the GPL-3.0 license. The NLLB-200 models have a separate CC-BY-NC-4.0 license that restricts them to noncommercial use, and Piper voices carry their own licenses.
