Linguist

Linguist is a free browser translation extension for people who read across languages and want control over where their text goes. Its built-in Bergamot translator processes text on your device without an internet connection. You can also choose an external translation provider or connect a local backend such as Ollama or LibreTranslate.

It translates full web pages, selected passages, private messages, and subtitles, including Netflix subtitles. Page translation preserves the layout, keeps the original wording accessible, and can run automatically based on language or domain. It also supports pages behind logins or paywalls and live translation in Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams.

The choice of backend is a main reason to consider it. Google, Yandex, and Microsoft are supported providers; custom translators can connect services such as DeepL, ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Gemini. Offline translation keeps text on your device, while external services receive the text they translate. The extension itself doesn't collect or sell user data.

For language study, Linguist keeps searchable translation history and a personal dictionary that works offline. You can listen to original text and translations through text-to-speech. It runs in Chrome, Firefox, other Chromium browsers that support extensions, and compatible Android browsers. The project is open source under the BSD 3-Clause license. It doesn't translate text in images.
