Offline Translator is an Android app for translating material when you don't have an internet connection or want translation to stay on your device. It handles everyday text as well as images and PDF/ODT documents.
- Text across apps: Translate typed text, content shared from other Android apps, or selected text in a small popup without leaving the app you're reading.
- Images and documents: Translate PDF and ODT files, and use PaddleOCR to read text from images for translation.
- Language and word help: Automatic language detection identifies the source language, while transliteration helps with non-Latin scripts and a Wiktionary-based dictionary supports individual word lookups.
- Read aloud: Text-to-speech supports voices from Piper, Coqui, Kokoro, MMS, Sherpa ONNX and Mimic3.
The app uses Firefox translation models stored in local language packs. Once those packs are on the device, translation works fully offline and sends no translation requests to external servers. Packs can also be transferred to an Android device that has no internet access.
Supported languages include Arabic, Japanese, Ukrainian, English, and both simplified and traditional Chinese. Other Android apps can request translations through its API. The project is open source under GPL-3.0.
