Omit Redact

Omit Redact is beta software for offline PII redaction on Windows 10 and 11, built for people preparing sensitive files to share in legal, healthcare, financial and public sector work. Local language models detect names, organisations and places in seven languages, alongside pattern checks for IDs and account numbers. Files and processing stay on your device, with no account, cloud service or telemetry.

It handles Word documents, PDFs, email, plain text, CSV, Excel, JSON and common image formats. Local OCR reads printed text in scans and maps detections to the image for redaction. Word coverage includes headers, comments, tracked changes and document properties; email scanning includes recipients and other headers. Spreadsheet redaction works at the cell level and preserves formulas, column structure and numeric columns.

You can review detections before approving a redacted copy or allow automatic processing. Each entity type can use a different treatment: labels, black boxes, masking, hashing, pseudonyms or keeping the content. Custom deny-list terms help catch specific names. PDF redaction removes the underlying text, so search and copy-paste can't recover it. Omit leaves originals untouched and writes separate copies, plus a local HTML audit report of detections and their treatment.

The optional Protect clipboard guard ships disabled. It removes personal data from copied content before you paste it into a chatbot, email or another destination. Detection can miss information, and handwritten annotations need human review because OCR handles them poorly.
