PyGPT is a free, open-source desktop AI assistant for Windows, Linux and macOS under the MIT license. It brings local models, cloud chat and tool-using agents into one app for people who want to work with documents, code or automated tasks.

Local inference runs through Ollama, with models such as Qwen, Llama, Mistral and Gemma. Local models don't need external API keys. Cloud choices include OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek, alongside Hugging Face and OpenAI-compatible APIs. Those requests go to the chosen provider and require an internet connection and API credentials; plugins that use online services also need a connection.

Agents can delegate work to other agents, coordinate tasks through an orchestrator or run a swarm of workers. Portable SKILL.md skills and project-specific AGENTS.md instructions let users reuse agent behavior across projects. MCP connectors extend the available tools. Agents can execute Python and system commands, access files, call APIs and schedule recurring tasks, with sandbox and Docker support for code execution.

LlamaIndex powers retrieval from documents, webpages, images, audio, video and previous conversations. Separate project indexes and conversation memory support work that spans multiple chats. Supported models can analyze screenshots and camera input, handle realtime voice, generate images or video, and control the desktop or browser. Profiles keep settings, history and files separate, while built-in editors and a canvas support document work and visual prototyping.
