RepoRelay

A self-hosted code search engine connects Git repositories to MCP coding assistants, with versioned search and local Ollama embeddings.

RepoRelay makes Git repositories searchable by AI coding assistants across projects and versions. It's for developers who want a shared code index on their own infrastructure, accessible from different editors.

  • Code search: Combine exact text matching with semantic search to find named symbols or code related to a concept.
  • Code context: Retrieve symbols, imports, signatures and documentation comments, with code split at function boundaries; supported languages include TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Go, Java, Kotlin, Rust, C and C++, plus Markdown.
  • Versioned queries: Search independently indexed branches and tags, selecting a specific version or a semantic version range.
  • Repositories and clients: Connect repositories from GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps, other HTTPS Git servers or local disk, and query them through Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, OpenCode or another MCP client.
  • Project-aware results: Automatically detect a project's languages and filter searches to relevant repositories.

RepoRelay is open source under the MIT license and runs through Docker or directly with Node.js, backed by Postgres. A REST API and admin dashboard manage repositories and their indexes. Ollama supports local embeddings, including nomic-embed-text, and can use Metal GPU acceleration.

The index stays on your infrastructure, and RepoRelay sends no telemetry. A connected cloud LLM receives requested code snippets; a cloud embedding provider receives code chunks during indexing. Choosing local Ollama embeddings keeps embedding generation on your machine.
