Codanna

A local code intelligence server and CLI that gives AI coding agents semantic search, call graphs and impact analysis through MCP.

Codanna helps developers and AI coding agents explore a repository and assess which code a change could affect. It connects code search with function relationships, so an assistant can get context around a match in one response.

  • Code search with context: Search by symbol name or a natural-language description and get matching symbols with signatures, documentation and exact file locations.
  • Call graphs and impact analysis: Trace callers, callees and dependencies across files, with exact call sites and relationships verified through code resolution.
  • Project document search: Search Markdown and text collections alongside code to give agents access to project documentation.
  • Agent and CLI access: Use it through MCP with Claude Code, Cursor, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI and other compatible clients, or query the same index yourself through the standalone CLI.

Codanna runs on your machine and stores the repository index on disk. After the initial model download, embeddings run locally. By default, it sends no source code, symbols or queries to a remote API. Optional OpenAI-compatible remote embeddings send embedding requests to the selected service.

File watching updates the index as code changes. Supported languages include Rust, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Java, C++, C#, Kotlin and Swift. It reads project manifests to resolve code relationships.

The project is open source under Apache 2.0.
