avante.nvim brings Cursor-style AI assistance into Neovim for developers who want to keep their editor and choose their own model backend. It answers questions about code, suggests changes and applies edits directly to source files. The plugin is open source under Apache 2.0.
Model choice is a central part of its appeal. It connects to local LLM backends including Ollama and llama-cpp, as well as cloud providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral and DeepSeek. The editor plugin runs locally; choosing a cloud provider sends the code context used for requests to that service. Optional Fast Apply also sends original code and edit instructions to the Morph API to merge changes.
You can give the assistant context beyond the current file, including repository maps, selected files, open buffers and editor diagnostics. Project instruction files let it refer to your coding conventions throughout a conversation. An optional local retrieval service adds project context, while reusable prompt templates cover recurring requests such as refactoring.
Agent Client Protocol support connects Neovim to Codex, Gemini and Claude Code agents for code editing, file operations and tool execution. Zen Mode presents a terminal agent interface while retaining Neovim underneath. For tasks that need outside information, web search integrations include Brave Search, Kagi and SearXNG.
