Kilo Code is an AI coding agent for developers who want help writing and understanding code in their editor or terminal. It runs in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs and the CLI, with cloud agents available for remote work. The project is open source under the MIT license and can be self-hosted.
You can use local models to keep code private, bring your own API keys, or use Kilo's hosted model access. The local model option is the relevant choice if you want to keep coding work on your own hardware. Hosted models and cloud agents involve services outside that setup. Kilo also lets you switch models during a task, while its automatic model routing can choose a model for the work.
The agent can make edits across files from a natural language request, suggest inline completions, and review its own changes. Its modes give different kinds of help: Code writes and refactors, Architect plans a feature, Ask answers questions about the codebase without editing files, and Debug traces problems. Custom agents are supported too.
Kilo can run terminal commands and control a browser as part of a task. For work that spans environments, it brings IDE, CLI and cloud agent sessions into one place and supports parallel work in isolated worktrees. Cloud agents and code review extend the same tool beyond local coding. Its marketplace adds agents, skills, MCP servers and plugins.
