OpenCode is a free, MIT-licensed AI coding agent for developers working in a terminal, IDE, or desktop app. The desktop app runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux, with support for both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It can use local models, giving developers a way to run the model on their own hardware.
Cloud models are an option too. OpenCode works with providers including Claude, GPT, and Gemini, and can use an existing GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT account. OpenCode also offers Zen, a separate service with models selected and tested for coding tasks. The choice of model matters for privacy: OpenCode says it doesn't store your code or context, while a cloud provider supplies the model when you choose one.
For codebase work, OpenCode automatically loads language server support for the project. You can run multiple agent sessions in parallel on the same project. Its development agent can make changes, while a read-only planning agent is suited to exploring code and working out an approach before edits. Shared session links let others refer to a run or help debug it.
