Cline is an AI coding agent for developers who want help understanding a codebase and changing it. Its shared agent core is open source under Apache 2.0. You can use it in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, or a terminal. A native desktop app runs on macOS and Windows. No editor is required for desktop sessions. The JetBrains plugin itself is not open source.
Cline can answer questions about files, dependencies, and code behavior before making coordinated edits across a project. It checks linter and compiler feedback as it works. Diffs and checkpoints let you review changes and undo them, while terminal access lets the agent run tests and respond to command output. Plan mode gives you a proposed approach before Act mode makes changes; you can approve edits and commands individually or allow them to run automatically.
You can pair Cline with models running on your machine through Ollama or LM Studio. It also supports Claude, GPT, Gemini, and OpenAI-compatible endpoints, including self-hosted ones. The model you choose determines where requests are processed.
For recurring work, the CLI can run without interaction in scripts and CI pipelines. Project rules and skills carry coding conventions into agent sessions. MCP servers connect Cline to external tools, and its SDK supports custom tools and agents embedded in other products. It can also coordinate specialist agents or run scheduled tasks.
