Code Buddy
A local AI coding agent for Linux, macOS and Windows that uses Ollama or cloud providers, edits repositories and checks changes against your tests.
Code Buddy is an AI coding assistant for developers who want a terminal agent running on their own machine, with a choice of local or cloud models. It reads repositories, edits code and runs commands on Linux, macOS and Windows. Ollama keeps model inference local without an API key or account; cloud providers send model requests off the machine. Routing includes automatic provider failover.
Its task loop plans changes and checks them against a verification command, such as a test suite, continuing until that check passes. Model choice matters: coding tasks need a model that can call tools reliably. Optional safeguards let you review proposed diffs or validate edits in an isolated workspace before they reach your files. Session history can restore or fork earlier work.
For larger projects, Code Buddy can divide independent tasks among sub-agents and search across repositories. Self-hosted peers can call each other's models and share read-only tools with workspace access restrictions. Project and user memory retain relevant lessons between sessions. An optional learning system evaluates proposed tools, skills and strategies, rejecting changes that fail to improve results; it doesn't retrain model weights.
The separate Cowork Electron app adds visual workflows, a media library and a video studio. A Claude Code plugin exposes read-only tools through MCP, and a Codex skill connects it to that assistant. Code Buddy uses Business Source License 1.1. The source-available license permits self-hosting and personal or non-commercial use, and prohibits offering it as a commercial service to third parties.
