GPT Pilot is a self-hosted AI coding assistant for developers who want an agent to build applications under their supervision. The project is no longer maintained. It uses the FSL-1.1-MIT source-available license, with restrictions on competing uses. It runs locally as a Python CLI and is the core technology behind the Pythagora VS Code extension.
Its main distinction is incremental development: it breaks an app description into tasks, writes code, reviews the changes and debugs problems as they arise. Developers can intervene when it gets stuck, review its work and request further features after the initial app is complete. Separate agents handle requirements, architecture, implementation and documentation, so the work includes planning and review as well as code generation.
Generated files stay in a local workspace, but model requests go to external providers. GPT Pilot supports OpenAI, Anthropic and Groq, with Azure and OpenRouter available through its OpenAI connection. These services require internet access and API credentials. It sends the code relevant to the current task to the model rather than putting the entire codebase into every conversation. Saved project progress lets developers resume work later.
The repository has a documented security incident: a credential-stealing payload was present from August 2025 until its removal on June 11, 2026. Anyone who ran affected source code during that period should treat credentials on that machine as compromised. The removal was a security cleanup; development remains inactive.
