Codewhale is a coding agent that runs on your computer and works with a model you choose. It's for developers who want help understanding a project, fixing bugs or automating repeated work, with control over the agent's access to files and commands. The open-source project uses the MIT license and is written in Rust.

The terminal and local browser client run on macOS, Linux and Windows without a Codewhale account. Both connect to the same local session. Model inference can run locally through Ollama, vLLM or SGLang, or use a hosted provider through your own API key or supported provider sign-in. Choosing a hosted model means using an external service for inference even though the agent runs on your machine.

The agent can inspect a repository, edit files, execute commands and run tests to check its changes. You can review edits as diffs, set approval requirements and interrupt tasks. A planning mode lets it examine a project without changing files or executing shell commands; undo and restore features help recover workspace changes.

Saved sessions retain conversations and tool results so you can resume unfinished work. Scripts and saved workflows handle recurring tasks, and the agent can also run from scripts or CI jobs. Fleet divides larger jobs among agents with different models and roles, with progress tracking. Plugins and MCP connections extend its available tools and services; skills and hooks let developers adapt its behavior to their projects.
