JARLIS
A self-hosted AI email assistant that sorts IMAP mail and drafts replies for review, with MIT licensing and support for Claude Code, Codex, Gemini and llm.
JARLIS is a self-hosted AI email assistant for people who want help sorting their inbox while keeping control over outgoing replies. It prepares drafts for review, flags messages that need attention and archives low-priority mail. It never sends replies automatically.
The Python application runs on your own machine, with scheduling support for macOS, Linux and Windows. It's open source under the MIT license. It connects to IMAP and SMTP providers including Gmail, Outlook/Microsoft 365, Fastmail and iCloud, as well as self-hosted mail servers. ProtonMail works through Bridge.
AI processing uses your choice of Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or llm. Running the assistant yourself doesn't make the selected AI service local: email context goes to the AI backend you choose. JARLIS has no telemetry, keeps mail credentials in your OS keychain and excludes those passwords from the AI's context. It uses read-only AI access by default where the backend supports it.
Its memory consists of editable Markdown files covering contacts, topics, personal context and examples of your writing. Drafts draw on sender history and email threads, and the assistant detects the incoming message's language to choose the reply language. Matching writing samples help it follow your style.
Rules handle known topics before the assistant asks an LLM to classify ambiguous messages. Scheduled recaps report mailbox activity, and each classification records its reason. The user-facing interface and recap text support English, French and Japanese.
