LocalWriter brings local LLM writing assistance into LibreOffice Writer for people who want to draft and revise text inside their documents. It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux and connects to a separate model runner, including Ollama and text-generation-webui. With a backend on your own machine, text processing stays local.
Its two main commands work on selected text. Extend Selection generates a continuation, which can help develop a story, draft an email or add items to a list. It can also produce summaries. Edit Selection takes your written instructions and replaces the selected passage with the model's revision, supporting tasks such as changing an email's tone, translating a passage or reworking a scene.
You choose the model through your backend, so the extension isn't tied to one language model. Supported examples include Gemma 3 through Ollama and OpenChat through text-generation-webui.
LocalWriter also supports OpenAI-compatible endpoints and OpenWebUI, so local processing depends on the server you connect it to. Text goes to that chosen endpoint; a remote service processes it away from your machine. Separate system prompts for continuation and editing let you guide the model's writing style for each task.
The README states that most code uses MPL 2.0, with some code under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0.
