Oleafly is a desktop editor for researchers writing papers, theses and other long documents in LaTeX, Typst or Markdown. It brings the manuscript, PDF preview and research tools into one workspace, with projects stored as ordinary files you own.

  • Writing and compilation: Edit in code or visual mode, compile on your computer, and jump between the source and PDF; the last successful preview stays visible when a build fails.
  • Optional AI assistance: Use Claude Code, Codex, an OpenAI-compatible endpoint or Ollama to revise text, create figures and repair compilation errors, with file changes you can review and undo.
  • Research and citations: Cite from Zotero and search arXiv, Semantic Scholar, Crossref, PubMed and OpenAlex inside the editor; separate research tasks can propose changes while you keep writing.
  • Coauthoring and history: Work together through a self-hosted server with shared cursors and comments, merge offline edits after reconnecting, and keep project history in Git with GitHub sync.
  • Submission checks: Run local spelling and grammar checks, then check for broken references, missing figures, font embedding problems, accessibility gaps and details that could reveal authors during anonymous review.

Oleafly is free and open source under AGPL-3.0 for macOS, Windows and Linux. The desktop editor needs no account and supports offline writing. Tectonic, Typst and Pandoc are built in, with support for TeX Live, MacTeX, MiKTeX and TinyTeX. Collaboration uses Oleafly Server on Linux, while optional cloud sync transfers projects and settings between computers. AI can use a local Ollama model; hosted providers and external agents use their own services and credentials.
