smol developer

Python coding agent with a self-hosted Agent Protocol API and an embeddable library. Default generation calls GPT-4 through the OpenAI SDK. MIT licensed.

smol developer is a Python coding agent with a self-hosted API for generating codebases from product specifications. It's for developers prototyping applications or adding code generation to their own software. Its default generation workflow uses GPT-4 through the OpenAI Python SDK, whose standard API endpoint sends model requests to OpenAI’s cloud. Self-hosting controls the agent server, while this standard model connection remains remote.

The product specification determines the codebase it generates, so the agent isn't limited to a fixed application starter. Developers can refine that specification as they review the output. Markdown requirements can include code samples, API request and response examples, or error messages to give the model concrete context for the application.

An importable library exposes the agent's building blocks to other applications. That makes it relevant to developers building their own code-generation interface as well as those generating a project directly. The self-hosted server uses Agent Protocol to expose task creation and individual execution steps to API clients.

The workflow keeps a human developer involved in reviewing and revising the generated code. For debugging, it can combine codebase contents with an error report to request specific fixes. API examples can also help it produce code around services unfamiliar to the model.

The project is open source under the MIT license.
