GitAgent

An open-source AI agent framework that runs locally, stores agent definitions in Git, and connects to Anthropic, OpenAI and other model providers.

GitAgent is an MIT-licensed, open-source AI agent framework for developers who want to keep an agent's behavior and memory under version control. It runs locally, with its configuration, personality, rules and saved memory stored as files in a Git repository. That makes changes reviewable through diffs and history, and lets teams fork an agent or maintain different behaviors on separate branches.

The local runtime connects to model providers through pi-ai, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI, Groq and Mistral. Those hosted model connections require internet access and provider credentials; running the framework on your machine doesn't make model inference local. Agent definitions and saved memory live in the repository, while model requests go to the selected provider.

For coding work, the agent can read and write files, execute shell commands and retain memory across sessions. Its GitHub repository mode can clone a project, commit changes to a session branch and push them back, with support for resuming that session later. A sandbox VM is also available as a separate execution mode.

Developers can use the CLI or embed agents through an SDK that runs within their application and streams responses and tool events. Custom tools, reusable skills and plugins extend the agent, while hooks can block actions or change tool arguments. MCP support connects it to local or remote servers for tools such as GitHub, Postgres and filesystem access. An optional voice package provides a browser interface served locally.
