This tutorial sets up Immich as a self-hosted alternative to Google Photos and iCloud Photos on a Raspberry Pi. The presenter describes it as free, open source software and demonstrates photo uploads, a timeline organized by metadata, and people search using a local AI model.
The hardware setup uses an external SSD for photo storage. The presenter advises against storing the library on the Pi's microSD card because of performance concerns. He says a spare computer or laptop can also work, including Mac and Windows, while citing documentation that recommends Linux with at least 8 GB of RAM.
Installation follows the Docker Compose approach. The walkthrough downloads the Compose and environment files, changes the upload path to the SSD, sets the time zone, and starts the containers. The presenter leaves the database path unchanged for testing and resolves a startup error by updating outdated Docker tools. He then opens the web interface through the Pi's hostname and port 2283 to create an account.
The mobile walkthrough covers folder selection, enabling backup, and automatic sync. It also shows photo cropping and search filters. The backup discussion warns that losing the single storage drive would mean losing its contents. The presenter introduces a 3-2-1 strategy and proposes Amazon S3 as an offsite copy; the video does not demonstrate that backup setup.
