This tutorial explains how to run Kokoro TTS locally through Voicebox, an open source desktop app. The speaker compares an ElevenLabs Adam sample with Kokoro output and judges ElevenLabs better, while finding Kokoro usable without a dedicated GPU. The voice resemblance is a listening judgment, not evidence that Kokoro cloned those voices.
Setup starts at voicebox.sh. After installing Voicebox, users download Kokoro from the model list; the demonstrated download is about 300 MB. The speaker says CPU operation is supported and recommends an optional GPU backend for Nvidia or AMD hardware to speed up generation. That setup involves downloading the backend in settings and restarting the app.
Users then create a built-in voice profile, choose Kokoro as the engine and select a language the voice supports. The tutorial shows American and British English choices and discusses limited support for other languages. In the speaker's testing, the personality description had little or no effect on the voice profile.
The local AI demonstration includes speech generation alongside Task Manager. The speaker reports an initial loading delay and a later sample generated in under two seconds on their computer; this is not a benchmark for other hardware. The final steps cover exporting audio, using Stories for multiple paragraphs and unloading the model to release system or GPU memory.
