Magnitude is an open source inference engine for running open models with coding agents. This comparison examines its speed claims against Ollama and the limits that matter when choosing a local LLM runner.
The speaker reports that Magnitude's benchmarks average about 2.2 times faster answer generation and 1.3 times faster prompt processing. With a fresh 64,000-token prompt, the full request finishes only about 1.3 times faster because reading dominates the wait. The benchmark used predictable passage repetition, did not score answer quality and compared against Ollama 0.35.1. These results do not establish performance on a real coding task.
The catalog described contains 19 models and does not accept arbitrary GGUF imports. Magnitude also requires fresh downloads rather than reusing Ollama or LM Studio weights. Its tuning targets M1 through M4 Macs and Nvidia Ampere or newer GPUs. The model must fit entirely in GPU memory; Magnitude lacks Ollama's split between GPU memory and system RAM. The speaker also reports mixed early results on M5 Macs and newer Nvidia hardware.
Setup includes chip-specific tuning and agent configuration. Version 0.2.9 supports Claude Code without a Claude login through Magnitude's gateway. Mac and Linux support server mode; Windows does not. Magnitude can run alongside Ollama, so the speaker recommends timing the same model on a real coding task before switching.
