This tutorial explains LoRA fine-tuning with Hugging Face PEFT using GPT-2. LoRA keeps the base model weights frozen and trains adapter matrices in selected layers. The speaker presents it as a way to reduce memory and storage needs for local LLM training, though the example does not establish hardware requirements for larger models.

The workflow starts with Transformers, PEFT, datasets and accelerate. It loads the model and tokenizer, downloads model files if they are not cached, and selects CUDA when available. The speaker notes that CPU training is slower. Configuration covers rank, alpha, target modules, dropout, bias and task type. The example uses rank 16, 0.1 dropout and GPT-2 attention projections, then trains for three epochs with AdamW at a learning rate of 5e-4. The parameter count quoted in the presentation is not independently verified.

The later sections explain how to save adapter weights separately, reload them with a base model, generate text and merge the adapter into the model. Merging produces a full-size model; the speaker describes simpler deployment and slightly faster inference as benefits. The tutorial also covers switching adapters and troubleshooting missing target modules or memory errors. It explains code and expected behavior without establishing a measured training-quality or inference-speed result. Its small dataset and basic training loop are teaching examples; the speaker recommends validation, learning-rate scheduling and early stopping for production work.
