Voicetypr is a desktop dictation app for people who write emails, code, prompts, or notes throughout the day. It inserts speech as text wherever your cursor sits, including in Slack, Gmail, Cursor, and Notion. Local transcription works offline, with your recordings and transcripts staying on your machine. The source code uses the AGPL-3.0 license; the desktop product is paid.
Whisper runs locally on macOS and Windows, while Parakeet is optimized for Apple Silicon Macs. The app supports macOS 14 or later and Windows 10 or later, with a minimum of 4 GB RAM. Intel Mac support is legacy and best-effort; Apple Silicon is fully supported. On Windows, it can use the GPU for faster transcription or fall back to the CPU.
Dictation includes push-to-talk and hands-free recording, automatic language detection, custom vocabulary, translation, and formatting rules for individual apps. You can also transcribe audio and video files and search a local transcript history. Its CLI and API let scripts and AI agents such as OpenClaw, Hermes, and nanoclaw capture speech and receive text or structured JSON.
Optional cloud transcription sends audio to providers such as Soniox, OpenAI, Groq, or Deepgram. AI cleanup uses your own OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini key to rewrite rough dictation into emails, notes, prompts, or code; that step sends only the transcript, never the recording. Network transcription lets a lighter laptop send audio to another Voicetypr installation on a stronger computer over your own network.
