Amical

Amical is a free, open-source AI dictation app that formats spoken text for the app you're using. It's for people who want voice input for email, chat, coding prompts and everyday writing, with a choice between local processing and cloud models. It runs on macOS and Windows, with mobile apps for iOS and Android.

The desktop app can work fully offline, using Whisper for speech recognition and open source language models through Ollama for text processing. In local mode, your dictation stays on your machine. Cloud providers are optional and process dictation remotely. Local Whisper transcription on macOS requires macOS 15 or later; the desktop app doesn't support Linux.

Amical uses the active app's context to adjust tone and formatting. An email can use professional phrasing while a chat message stays casual. It also corrects grammar and pronouns, adds contextual emojis, and adapts to your vocabulary and writing style. This processing turns spoken input into text suited to its destination, rather than leaving all the editing to you.

Custom vocabulary helps it recognize names and specialist terms such as PostgreSQL or industry jargon. Multilingual dictation supports switching languages and mixing them within the same input. Custom hotkeys, voice macros and workflows support repeated actions, while a floating widget provides access to dictation controls. The project uses the MIT license.
