Civitai is a self-hostable platform for sharing AI image models and artwork. Its Apache-2.0 code provides accounts, model uploads, browsing and comments. The public Civitai website also operates a hosted image generator, which is separate from the runnable local platform.
The library includes checkpoints and Stable Diffusion customization assets such as textual inversions, hypernetworks, VAEs, and aesthetic gradients. Creators can upload their models, while comments and feedback give others a place to discuss results and improvements. Community galleries and curated collections provide examples to browse alongside the model listings.
The website also generates images. Its hosted generator accepts checkpoints, and models already loaded into it are available to other users. The site includes shared videos, articles, comics, and creator pages, so it covers both the models and the work people produce with them.
The platform code is open source under Apache 2.0, and a local copy runs with Node.js and Docker-backed services. That local copy has limits: image generation and training depend on external services and don't work locally. Chat, notifications, other live updates, and Buzz also depend on services unavailable in the local setup. The public website's generator runs as a hosted service, rather than on your own hardware. Uploading models requires an account. Individual uploaded models carry their own licenses; the platform’s Apache-2.0 license does not apply to those weights.
