LibrePhotos is a self-hosted photo manager for people who want to organize a photo library on their own server, with AI tools for finding images and grouping faces. It scans files already on your storage and supports RAW photos as well as videos. The project is open source under the MIT license.
You can browse your library in a timeline, search its metadata, or use semantic image search to find photos by what they depict. Face recognition and classification help organize pictures by person, while object and scene detection add another way to find images without tagging each one yourself. LibrePhotos can also generate albums around events and use reverse geocoding to identify places.
Its AI features use named models for different jobs: InsightFace detects faces, MobileCLIP-S2 or SigLIP 2 handles tagging, and CLIP with FAISS powers semantic search. LFM2.5-VL generates image captions with context about recognized people and places. The models run through ONNX Runtime.
LibrePhotos has a browser interface and supports multiple users. Its Android and iOS app uses an offline-first approach. The server runs on Docker-compatible operating systems, with Linux recommended. It needs at least 4 GB of RAM and a two-core CPU; 8 GB or more is recommended for memory-heavy tasks such as face recognition and captioning.
