Ente Photos is a Google Photos alternative for people who want encrypted photo backups and AI search without giving a storage provider access to their library. You can use its hosted service or self-host the server. Face detection, grouping and natural-language search run on your device; the hosted service stores your encrypted backups.
The apps cover Android, iOS, macOS, Windows and Linux, with browser access too. Background uploads back up photos and videos automatically, and syncing makes the library available across devices. Ente preserves original quality and EXIF metadata, supports HEIC files and keeps iPhone Live Photos together. You can import libraries from Google or Apple and export your collection when you want to move it elsewhere.
Sharing includes private albums with viewers or collaborators who can contribute their own photos. Public album links let guests browse and upload through a browser without an app or account, and those uploads also use end-to-end encryption. Smart albums and curated memories help organize and revisit the library, while comments and likes support shared collections.
The client apps and server are open source under AGPL-3.0. Ente's code and cryptography have undergone external audits by Cure53, Symbolic Software and Fallible. The service doesn't use your photos to train AI models or show ads.
