PearAI is an open source AI code editor built on Microsoft’s VS Code, for developers and makers who want AI assistance inside their project. It combines questions about existing code with an agent that can write features and fix bugs. Its VS Code foundation gives it a familiar editing environment.
The chat assistant uses Continue, and PearAI’s assistant submodule is a fork of that project. Chat can use your codebase and file context to answer questions or generate code, while inline edits let you request changes to a specific part of a file. This puts project context alongside the conversation instead of making you copy code into a separate chat app.
PearAI Agent uses Roo Code / Cline to carry out coding tasks and bug fixes. That gives users a choice between asking for advice, requesting a targeted edit, and having an agent work on the code directly.
The editor runs on your computer, and your code is stored locally. PearAI also offers a cloud service, PearAI Router, which selects coding models across its tools. Local code storage doesn't make that hosted model service offline, and the router is separate from the editor's MIT-licensed source code.
PearAI uses TypeScript and Electron. Its main AI functionality lives in the Continue-derived submodule, while the application itself builds on VS Code.
