Chatbox is an AI chat client for people who want local models and cloud providers in the same app. It connects to Ollama for local LLM use and supports GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek with your own API keys. Chatbox also offers its own hosted model service.
The app runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with iOS, Android and browser versions available too. The Community Edition is open source under GPL-3.0. Chat history stays stored locally, as do documents in the desktop knowledge base. Cloud model requests go to the selected provider or Chatbox's hosted service, so local storage doesn't mean every conversation stays on your device.
For document work, Chatbox can summarize files, answer questions about their contents and extract information from PDFs, Word documents, images and code snippets. Its desktop-only knowledge base lets AI search your private documents across a stored collection. Live web search supplies information from the internet.
Work Mode gives an AI agent access to files, web search and tools so it can write code, build chatbots and carry out tasks autonomously. Chat also supports MCP tools. Code generation includes live previews, and the app can generate images, including through DALL-E-3.
Saved prompts and message quoting help with recurring work and follow-up questions. Responses can display Markdown, highlighted code, LaTeX formulas and Mermaid diagrams.
