Tel-Agent is a self-hosted AI receptionist for businesses that want phone calls and customer messages handled in one place. It runs on your own hardware and keeps recordings and searchable transcripts on your machine. It's free and open source under the AGPL-3.0 license.

The phone agent connects to SIP lines and existing phone systems such as 3CX, Asterisk and FreePBX. Caller routing rules decide who reaches the AI, who goes straight to a person and which calls get blocked. During a conversation, the agent can take a message, transfer the call, check a calendar or act through an HTTP endpoint. Callers can interrupt its spoken replies.

The same agent also answers web chat, SMS, email, WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Instagram and Discord. Conversations share a searchable archive, and notifications alert a person when a message arrives. You connect channels with your own platform credentials. Webhooks and HTTP tools let the agent work with systems such as n8n and Home Assistant.

Tel-Agent runs on Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon or Intel), Linux and Docker. You connect AI providers with your own API keys; MCP integrations provide access to external tools. The server and conversation archive stay local, but the documented voice setup uses Deepgram for speech recognition, a cloud LLM and ElevenLabs for speech synthesis, so those services process the corresponding audio or text over the internet. Tel-Agent encrypts stored API keys and enables recording announcements by default.
