Discourse’s bundled AI plugin adds forum assistants, semantic search, summaries and moderation. Configure a self-hosted model service or cloud provider.
Discourse AI is the official AI plugin bundled with Discourse. Forum administrators can enable its features independently, including an AI bot, semantic search, topic and chat summaries, spam detection and writing assistance. It runs inside a Discourse community, which you can host on your own server.
The AI bot retrieves information from the forum to answer questions. Administrators choose its model provider and can create custom agents for tasks such as researching forum content or helping with SQL queries. Access can be limited to selected users or groups, and multiple people can participate in a bot conversation.
Hosting the forum does not determine where inference runs. Discourse supports cloud providers and documented self-hosted language-model services. You must configure a model connection; cloud providers process the content sent to them. Some features also need their own services, such as embeddings for semantic search or a Google Custom Search API key for web research.
The writing helper can explain, proofread and translate text. AI triage works with the Automation plugin to classify posts and take configured moderation actions. The code also includes an evaluation suite for comparing models and agent prompts. Discourse is open source under GPL-2.0.
