Tolaria is an open source desktop app for Markdown knowledge bases. The video describes a Tauri shell with React and Rust, licensed under AGPL-3.0. Each vault is a folder of Markdown files with YAML front matter and a Git repository. Users supply their own backups and sync. The speaker compares this file-based approach with Obsidian and contrasts it with Notion's storage model.
The setup walkthrough covers macOS release archives and a Linux AppImage. A development build requires Node 20+, pnpm 8+ and stable Rust, followed by pnpm install and pnpm tauri dev. Tolaria opens existing Markdown folders and initializes Git when needed.
Its bundled MCP server gives a coding assistant access to the vault. The speaker describes Claude Code listing, reading, searching, creating and modifying notes, with Codex CLI supported through the same protocol. Suggested uses include research summaries and updates to project notes. This is a local file workflow; the video does not establish that the connected models run locally.
At the time described, Windows support was planned and Tolaria had no iOS, Android or progressive web app. Mobile access required a separate editor and Git sync workflow. The speaker also reports keyboard shortcut issues and nonstandard code fence handling. Luca Rossi's claim that agents built the entire 100,000-line codebase is presented as his account, not an independently verified result.
