Void

Void is an open-source desktop AI code editor for developers who want to choose their own models and control where coding prompts go. It's a fork of VS Code, licensed under Apache 2.0. The project is archived and no longer maintained.

You can connect it to locally hosted models such as DeepSeek, Llama and Qwen, or use cloud models from providers including Claude and Gemini. Messages go directly to the selected provider rather than through a Void backend, and Void doesn't retain them. With a local model, you control the model host; choosing a cloud provider sends your prompts to that service.

The editor combines tab autocomplete with inline edits to selected code. Its chat includes Agent Mode for work on your codebase, Gather Mode and ordinary conversation. Support for fill-in-the-middle models gives autocomplete a dedicated model option, while Fast Apply handles suggested code changes, including in large files.

Checkpoints let you review and return to earlier states after AI edits. Void also visualizes code changes and detects lint errors, so you can inspect what the model changed and catch problems within the editor. Existing VS Code themes, keybindings and settings can transfer over, which makes it relevant to developers who want an AI coding assistant in a familiar workspace.

The repository includes the full desktop app source, including its AI provider code and services for displaying streamed edits and changing files in the background.
