Whispering
An open-source dictation app for browser and desktop use, with a Chrome extension and Groq-hosted Whisper transcription.
Whispering turns speech into text through a browser interface, a Chrome extension, or a desktop app. It's for people who prefer dictating to typing and want a shortcut to start recording. The app is open source under AGPL-3.0-or-later.
You can start a recording manually, use voice activation, or upload an audio file for transcription. The recording interface lets you choose your microphone, then displays the resulting text with a clipboard copy action. These options cover both live dictation and audio you've already recorded.
The website uses Groq's hosted Whisper service with the whisper-large-v3-turbo model. That transcription path needs an internet connection and sends audio to a cloud provider, so running the desktop app doesn't make transcription fully offline. The app interface and the service that processes your audio are separate parts of the workflow.
Whispering also lets you select a post-processing transformation to run after transcription. This adds a text-processing stage after speech recognition, before you copy the result. The desktop app offers additional integrations beyond the browser interface.
