Grist is a relational spreadsheet for teams building shared data tools beyond a flat grid. Linked tables, typed columns and custom layouts let users organize records into applications for their own workflows.

  • Related records and layouts: Connect tables with references and arrange linked records, charts and data cards into views suited to different tasks.
  • Formulas and AI help: Python formulas support the standard library and familiar Excel functions; the AI Formula Assistant helps generate formulas through OpenAI, OpenRouter or an OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
  • Forms and permissions: Collect responses into tables and control collaborators' access down to rows and columns, including the information available to the AI assistant.
  • Connections: REST APIs, webhooks and custom widgets connect spreadsheet data to other software and extend how users display it.

The Community core is open source under Apache 2.0 and can run on a self-hosted server with Docker. Grist also offers managed hosting and a separate commercial edition with additional capabilities. Its broader AI Assistant isn't part of the Community core.

Grist Desktop views and edits local files on Linux, macOS and Windows. Documents use a portable, self-contained SQLite format. Grist Static displays spreadsheets entirely in the browser without a backend. AI requests go to the selected model endpoint; using a remote provider sends those requests outside the local deployment.
