Handy is a free, MIT-licensed speech-to-text app for people who want to dictate wherever they type on a computer. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Transcription happens locally, so your voice stays on your machine and the app can work offline.
Handy puts the recognized words into the active text field, letting you use dictation across desktop apps. A keyboard shortcut controls recording: you can hold it while speaking or press it once to start and again to stop. The shortcut can be changed to suit how you work.
You can choose between Whisper and Parakeet V3 models. Whisper can use GPU acceleration when available and accepts compatible custom GGML models. Parakeet V3 is optimized for CPU use and detects the spoken language automatically. Handy also filters silence from recordings with Silero before transcription.
For Raycast users, an integration provides recording controls and access to transcript history, dictionary, model and language settings. The app's source code is available under the MIT license, so developers can extend it for their own needs.
