Nowen Note is a self-hosted note app and private knowledge base for individuals and teams who want their documents on a server or NAS they control. It combines writing, knowledge search and task management, with access through a browser, Windows and macOS desktop clients, or Android. It's open source under GPL-3.0.
Rich-text and Markdown notes share one folder tree, and you can switch a note between formats while preserving its main structure, code blocks and links. The editors support tables, math, Mermaid diagrams and media embeds. Version history and comments sit alongside the writing tools.
AI features work with Ollama for local models or external services such as Qwen, Gemini, DeepSeek and OpenAI-compatible APIs. They cover rewriting, translation, summaries, title and tag suggestions, plus knowledge Q&A that retrieves material from your notes. Where AI processing happens depends on the backend you choose; connecting a cloud service sends requests outside your server.
Full-text search, backlinks, block references and a knowledge graph help connect documents. Teams can edit together in real time, assign notebook permissions and share content publicly with guest comments. Folder passwords and access rules protect restricted material, including in search results.
Tasks support Kanban, calendar and Gantt views, dependencies, recurring work and reminders. Mind maps provide another way to organize ideas. Docker deployment and support for UGREEN UGOS and Feiniu fnOS suit NAS-based libraries. Databases, attachments and backups stay under your control, with optional attachment storage in S3, Cloudflare R2 or MinIO.
