ScribeDog

ScribeDog is a Markdown editor for writers and note-takers who want AI assistance while keeping their documents on their own hardware. It displays formatted text, tables and images instead of Markdown syntax, but saves ordinary .md files that work with Git and other editors. It has a native desktop app and a self-hosted Server Edition available through Docker.

Local AI connects through Ollama, Jan.ai or LM Studio. With local models, writing and AI processing can stay entirely on your machine. OpenAI, Anthropic and Mistral are optional cloud providers using your own API key; choosing them sends the relevant text to that service. ScribeDog is open source under the MIT license, requires no account and has no telemetry.

The writing assistant can rewrite passages, translate text, draft additions and suggest grammar corrections. Its AI agent can propose changes across a folder of notes and keep a visible plan for work spanning several files. You review edits before they reach your documents, and you can undo an entire batch. Agentic chat suits capable models of roughly 9B parameters or larger; smaller models can handle the simpler passage-rewriting workflow.

Knowledge-base search lets the assistant answer from selected note folders and cite the passages it used. Linked notes and backlinks help connect related material. You can also supply PDFs, Word documents or images as chat context, with image OCR requiring a vision-capable model.

Dictation runs locally through whisper.cpp after a one-time model download. Audio stays on your device. Local version history supports comparisons and restoration, and export covers PDF, DOCX, ODT and HTML.
