NoteGen is an AI note-taking app for people who collect meeting fragments, research material, and ideas before deciding how to organize them. It stores notes as ordinary Markdown files and keeps attachments locally. Capturing, browsing, and writing work offline, and the app doesn't require an account. It's open source under GPL-3.0, with Windows, macOS and Linux installers. Android and iOS builds are in early testing; iOS uses TestFlight.
Text, voice recordings, screenshots, links, and files share one collection, with tags and filters to find related material later. AI can turn selected records into meeting notes, reports, or articles, then help rewrite or translate the draft. The editor supports visual editing and Markdown source mode, including tables, math, and diagrams. You can open your files in another editor without exporting them.
The AI agent searches your notes, records, and knowledge bases, shows its sources and tool calls, and can write results back to files. Search combines semantic retrieval with local text search. Choose local Ollama or LM Studio models for AI writing and knowledge indexing. A local index can still use cloud embedding or reranking providers, which receive the text they process. It also supports MCP servers and reusable Skills.
An infinite canvas connects notes, images, and links in editable maps, flowcharts, and other diagrams. For syncing, you can use GitHub or GitLab, S3-compatible storage, WebDAV, OneDrive, or iCloud Drive. The optional NoteGen Server runs through Docker for sync and collaboration. This server is experimental and stores its database and attachments on your server; it is separate from the native editor and model runtime.
