Hister is an open source browser history search tool that indexes page content locally. The presenter sets it up on an Apple M4 Mac using the Darwin ARM64 binary, runs hister listen, and opens the interface on port 4433. A Chrome extension adds visited pages automatically; the video also describes a Firefox extension.
The search demonstration uses a phrase buried inside an article. Hister returns the page with matching text, while the same search in Chrome history returns nothing. The presenter then demonstrates domain and body-text filters, plus terminal searches with hister search. Existing history can be imported with hister import browser, but Hister must revisit those URLs to retrieve their current content. The extension instead captures the rendered pages the user visits.
According to the presenter, Hister stores compressed HTML locally for offline access and exposes an MCP endpoint that lets a coding assistant query the browsing index. The comparison with Karakeep, ArchiveBox and other read-later tools centers on automatic capture rather than deciding which pages to save.
The review reports several limitations: Safari does not work, the index lacks encryption, and the Mac binary is not notarized. The presenter warns that the supplied Docker Compose setup exposes the port with no authentication by default, recommends configuring authentication before network use, and advises checking the changelog for breaking changes in this pre-1.0 project.
